Today is the first of three sea days on our way to The Philippines. We are traversing waters that are known for pirate activity. In honor of the occasion there was a piracy drill this morning. We vacated our staterooms and sat low in interior spaces. This is supposed to safeguard us from weapons fire toward the ship. Crew manned water cannons that have been placed around the Lower Promenade deck. The captained has also instituted the use of long range listening devices to provide advanced warning of approaching unfriendly vessels. This area does not seem to be as threatening as the Somalia coast. There is no razor wire installed around the deck.

The test went well. We are prepared for the unlikely event of unexpected boarding. Rather like unexpected turbulence on an aircraft. We have noticed security personnel in bulletproof vests using binoculars to survey the sea around us. After dark, access to the outside deck is prohibited, and the ship runs with most exterior lighting turned off.

This was the extent of our “excitement” for today. Hopefully this will be it for excitement.
