August 1, 2023 - Tuesday - Vik, Norway
Vik is another small town with a stave church. We might see it later if time permits. First, we joined Sean and Shelly on a shore excursion to cruise on Aurlandsfjord. A two-and-a-half-hour coach ride through the mountains featured beautiful and often breathtaking scenery. The road featured hairpin turns and lengthy tunnels. We arrived at Flam shortly after 11:00 and board the cruise vessel at 11:15. We departed at 11:30 for our two-hour ride along the fjord. Our ship was a twin-hull electric boat. It was quiet and smooth and designed to have minimal impact on the environment.
We were cruising on waters several hundred deep and we were passing mountains hundreds and in some cases thousands of feet high. The sky was a wonderful blue with crisp white clouds. One could not ask for better weather. The time flew by. Soon we were on the coach again on our way back to Pursuit. We made one stop at a hotel high on a mountain with a spectacular view. I apologize for the superlatives, but even they do not do justice to the beauty we have been experiencing everywhere.
As we returned to Vik the guide told us he would save us a walk by stopping at the stave church that dates back to the 1700s. This was a photo stop only because it was not on the schedule and we were running late as it was. Sean, Shelly, Alice, and I were glad to have the opportunity and pleased to save the steps.
We were all anxious to experience the fjords before we left home. We all agreed that the reality surpassed our lofty expectations.
You could call this an easy day because all we seemed to do was ride. It was stress-free and a sensory overload.
Another wonderful day.
