August 7, 2023 - Oslo, Norway

 August 7, 2023 - Monday - Oslo Embarkment Day

We saw Sean and Shelly at breakfast this morning and bid them farewell. We have really had a happy time with them. They will disembark in the rain and make their way to the hotel where they will spend the night. Their flight home will be tomorrow since the scheduled departure is too early in the morning for them to leave today.

This is the first day of heavy rain that we hav experienced since we left home. Sean let us know that he and Shelly made the best of it and did manage to take in more of Oslo’s sights. When they arrived home they confirmed their safe arrival.

Due to the rain Alice and I decided to stay on board in comfort. When we have back to back cruises, it is fun to see the new passengers arrive and struggle to get their bearings. We try to be helpful in directing them. It is also great to get the appreciation from crew who recognize our loyalty. For us this was a leisurely day with no anxiety.

While we worked in our stateroom we noticed Disney Dream slowly cruise into a dock closer to downtown. She looks very big and graceful. We were surprised to see her docking so close to noon. We were even more surprised when she left just three hours later.

Another interesting event was the arrival of a motorized floating sauna. It approached our position piloted by a lone man in orange, and stopped about three hundred yards away. Eight men quickly exited the sauna shack and dove into the water. They swam around and some of them climbed to the roof to dive in. They enjoyed themselves for half an hour in the water. Then they reentered the sauna and the pilot motored away to a destination unknown by us.

I  had a brief conversation with Captain Antonio at lunch. He told me that he would be discussing a possible itinerary change in his departure briefing. Wow! In the briefing he told us that the weather was becoming even more severe and we would skip Arendal, Norway. To avoid the high waves that were building along our scheduled route up the North Sea, we would high tail it out of Oslo and sail across the North Sea to Aberdeen Scotland. It would take us all night and a day to make that crossing and we would experience rough seas that would not be as bad as maintaining our original schedule. Nonetheless we would experience waves of twelve to fifteen feet. Possibly higher.

Perhaps this is the reason for Disney Dream’s short stop.

After dinner we attended the entertainment with the Azamara Pursuit singers and dancers. Hope, one of the singers, had on a vest with a beautiful embroidery on the back. She kindly let Alice take a picture of it. This will make a wonderful project to digitize and sew out.

Then we went to our stateroom and to bed. It would take about four hours to cruise out of the protection of the Oslo fjord. Sure enough, shortly after 10:00 we started rocking and rolling gently.
