January 23, 2016 - Day 19 - Papeete, Tahiti

"We arrived in Papeete this morning. It is hot, sunny and very humid. The dock is right downtown. Our fist stop was the information center. We received a good map and advice not to use the local bus system. It is Saturday. The buses stop running at noon. Also, if they arrive at your stop full, they will not let you on. Tourist beware.

That was OK. Our plan was to visit the market first. We did this with great satisfaction. We saw beautiful flower arrangements for $10. Many passengers bought some for their cabins. We moved on to fruits and vegetables. Some flowers were truly foreign to us, but all looked   fresh and vibrant. We found a lot of crafts and a few t-shirt shops. This market consisted of 1 very large main floor. I would guess it was a full block. This was ringed by shops on a second floor gallery. Escalators and an elevator made getting around quite easy. I found a nice t-shirt and a necklace and earrings for Alice. Exhausted, we left.
THE MARKET

On the way back to the ship to have lunch and drop off our treasures, we walked down a block full of fabric shops. This put our specialty stores to shame. The various types of fabric came in a multitude of prints and colors. There were also finished shirts and cover ups. Women were sewing at the back of the store.

After lunch we set out on our walking tour. The first stop was city hall. The gates were closed, but as we stood outside the front gate a man with a rolling bag made his way through a side gate and up a long walk to the front door. We followed. Inside we found a beautiful, but locked wedding chapel. There were also many administrative offices. As we wandered around several others entered carrying books. It appeared that they were here for training of some sort. Shortly a stern looking woman approached us speaking French, the local language. This is French Polynesia. She soon understood that we only spoke English, and she asked what we were doing inside. We explained that we were just looking around (being tourists). She shook her head no, but let us finish. We took a few more pictures and left.
CITY HALL

Our next stop was the cathedral. When we got there, we started at the front door. Locked. So, we proceeded round the entire. Church. Every door was locked. We had been inside 5 years go when I pushed Alice in a wheelchair. We moved on.

One of the maps we had picked up in the morning had a walking tour on it. We diligently followed it. We saw monuments, memorials, government offices, dignitaries residences and several parks before we returned to the waterfront.

GOVERNMENT PALACE

We started the long walk back to the ship. We remembered seeing the statuary the last time. Some of the playground equipment was new. Home.  at last, we dressed for Mass and dinner. After dinner we attended the Polynesian dance show and retired.

Tomorrow is Moorea!
