January 27 - 31, 2016 - Days 23 - 26 - Sea Days

You may have noticed that the day count does not match the days in the dates. That is because we have crossed the International Dateline, and have lost a day. We are now a full day ahead of you. We will not get this day back until we fly home. Clock changes will bring us closer in hours, however.

As for the sea days, they have followed the pattern I laid out on January 25th. I can add that the weather has been extraordinary. It has remained sunny and warm. Only rarely have we sailed through a rain squall. Even then the ship has been steady. All rolling has been gentle. With the transverse setting of our beds we are rocked to sleep at night.

Alice has finished some nice crafts, and I have finished the last 5 books of Patrick Obrien's Aubrey/Maturin series. That makes a total of 21 books in 5 volumes with 6,528 pages. Captain Aubrey is a British naval officer who campaigns in the late 1700's and early 1800's. Doctor Stephen Maturin is the ship's doctor and faithful friend of Aubrey. They are the featured characters in the movie Master and Commander. That is just 1 of the 21 books. I am extremely grateful to Sean for lending me his full set at various times for various cruises. To be reading these great seafaring novels while seafaring in many of the same seas has been incredible. It has been an incredible experience to read of the hardships endured by seamen of that era while we forge on in safety and comfort.

One of the new lecturers is an astronomer. His talks on the vastness of the universe, our solar system, our stars and life elsewhere in the universe have been spellbinding. His practical tips on getting into astronomy have many passengers thinking about it. What joy.

Tomorrow is landfall in New Zealand's Bay of Islands. Our sail in at 6:00 AM will be spectacular. So says Captain Jonathan. We may get up to view it as we will sail away via a different route. We will tour independently. We hope to find a good internet connection so I can update the blog and upload the pictures that should be with it.
