January 10, 2019 - Sea Day
We have left Exmouth behind and are headed toward Broome. Today we have attended lectures and another cooking demonstration. Our lunch in the dining room was very interesting. We shared a table with a couple, Mary and Barry, from San Francisco and a fellow, Mitch, from Hawaii near Honolulu.
Mitch has been living in Hawaii for 5 years. He designs and manages the construction of commercial wind and solar energy projects. This takes him around the world. He is on this cruise in search of the ideal place to live. Very interesting fellow.
We learned that Barry was instrumental in the popularization of the Frisbee. He has expanded distribution, created the sport of professional Frisbee, developed Frisbee golf with over 1000 courses and just plain has had fun with it. He now consults a few times a year to help companies find ways to improve productivity. Another very interesting fellow.
Mary is charming. She was born in the Azores and has lived in many parts of the world. She has a witty sense of humor and many stories to tell.
What a delightful lunch. And to think we had asked for a table for 2 that they could not accommodate. Lucky us!
On the internet front I decided to bight the bullet and purchase time from the ship. In the past passengers could purchase packages of minutes of various quantities. I thought I would start with my usual 100 minutes and progress from there. Hah!. The new system sells either one day or 31 day packages in 3 tiers. I tried for the lowest 31 day pack at $150. It turns out that it does not include email. It is for social media, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, WhatsApp etc. I inquired about email capability at the desk and learned that I would have to move to the middle package for $80 more to get that. So here I am with 31 days of surfing and email for $230.
The one good thing about this is that it works. It is much faster than previous onboard service. And I can use it all day long if i choose as long as data transmission does not exceed 300 MB per day. No problem. We can use any of our devices as long as only on device is logged in at a time. So far it has worked great for email, surfing and blogging. But I have not worked with blog photos yet. I will check that out soon.
We have spent a lot of time learning about upcoming ports. Tomorrow we will start to experience some of that with our visit to Broome, WA.
Cheers!
