January 5, 2019 -Saturday in Fremantle

January 5, 2019
Fremantle, Australia

We had been promised that the cool 60’s would give way to the mid 80’s today. This was spot on.

At The Attic Alice elected to do a repeat of her Oat Bircher. I went with Green Chili Eggs. This was eggs topped with greens, lettuce, mint, jalapeños and a light sauce. It was very good, but yesterday’s Green Breakfast was much better.

After breakfast we did a dry run walking to the Passenger Terminal following a route provided by Google Maps. This .8 mile route was superior to one we had used last year to get to City Center. That one involved using a pedestrian bridge over the track separating the terminal from town. It had steep ramps instead of stairs. The Maps route had us cross the tracks at grade. It is an easy walk that will help us get a good step count for the day.

We have been walking 4.5 to 6.0 miles per day since leaving home.

From the terminal we walked to the E Shed Markets along the Harbor. These were awful. They offered mostly cheap souvenir type products made in China. We spent very little time here.

Now we were off to the Round House. This is not a place to turn steam engines around but rather the colony’s first civil Jail. It offers beautiful views of the harbor and Bathers’ Beach. It occupies a place atop a high seaside cliff.

After taking in the views we descended to sea level in order to follow a trail along the shore. The fresh breeze neutralized the rising temperature. This led us to the fishing boat harbor and the many restaurants fronting it. When we reached Little Creatures, a famous local pub, we crossed the road to Esplanade Park and the large Ferris wheel. We sat in the shade here watching kids in the play area and the Ferris wheel.

After an hour in the park we rode the Blue CAT line to the stop for South Beach. This is Freo’s premier beach. It was busy but not overcrowded. We watched the activity for a while before following the bike path to the sailboat harbor.

We managed to successfully trespass by entering through the trash entry. We could see about 30 sailboats participating in a regatta offshore. There were many boats still at their docks. These were great and small. The beauty and value represented here is beyond comprehension. We walked a long way into this marina before realizing that the only way out was the way we came in. The backtrack took us out very near a Blue CAT stop. We boarded the next bus, and got off at Esplanade Park once again.

We walked across the park to Little Creatures. Alice and I each ordered a different craft beer and shared a small tomato basil pizza. We enjoyed everything. This place is huge and was serving many hundreds of people at 1:00 on a Saturday afternoon. We sat outside by the water sharing a table with 4 non-talkative Australian tourists. That was a disappointment but it did not mar the experience.

When we ordered our beers we were asked if we wanted to run stab or pay as we go. We had not made a food choice yet so I opted for the tab. The server took my Visa to set up the tab. When she returned it she dropped a numbered brass tag on the table. Soon a different server came for our order. She entered the tag number on her phone/terminal along with our order. When we later asked for the bill, that same number took care of everything. Very efficient.

We left and crossed Esplanade Park to walk to our hotel. It was not far. Now Alice is processing emails and I am working on this blog. My next steps are to upload some pictures,in hopes of adding some interest for you, and going to Mass at 6:00. That will be at St. Patrick’s. I should be able to upload my blog posts tonight.

Tomorrow we will have our final breakfast at The Attic, check out and walk our bags over to Maasdam. We are looking forward to a quiet day onboard that we will use to explore our home for the next 81 days.

I will try to add some pictures here. If I succeed they will be of the Markets and the Fremantle Prison. I am not sure what order they will appear.
