July 6, Wednesday- Charter Day 4
Today we sailed to Vis town on Vis island. It was a very pleasant sail. We arrived in early afternoon and docked stern to at the city dock. This required lowering the plank from boat to shore after the lines were secured. The gap to the dock was such that only a few inches of the plank were on the dock. It was not long before the wave action heaved us away and the plank fell into the sea.
Ivor managed to get the plank onboard. He and I worked at further shortening the lines so we got Smile’s stern closer to shore. That helped stabilize the plank. We now had a usable gangway. We were able to negotiate it with some trepidation but without mishap.
Alice and I went to the office to pay the dock fee and retrieve the ship’s papers. Next stop was an ATM to get more Kunas. Restaurants are expensive here. We have averaged $85 per person.
Now it was time to walk. What immediately became apparent was that young women far outnumbered the men. They passed in groups of 3-5 and rivaled the surrounding landscape for natural beauty.
We stopped at an outdoor table at Lemon Bar to have a refreshing beer and enjoy the view. Our local beer came, a light for Alice and a dark for me. We shared tastes and decided they were both very good. The breeze and shade were very comfortable here. After a comfortable interlude we got up to finish our walk.
We passed the ferry terminal where cars had already started to line up for boarding. The ferry was not due for another 2 hours.
We continued around the harbor to the church. While we enjoyed the inside, we were far more impressed with the beautiful cemetery behind it. This cemetery on the hilltop occupied the most scenic viewpoint of the area. The gravestones were elegant and the graves were beautifully maintained. Below the cemetery was a nice beach crowded with swimmers and sunbathers.
Now we headed back to Smile. On the way we bought a liter of coke to share as we sat in a park near the water and watched the ferry arrive. Disembarking and embarking we’re efficient. We noticed several trucks coming off with produce, fruits and meat. Later I saw one of the produce trucks make a delivery to the market just across from our dock. You can’t grow everything on the island. Even if you could, the cruisers purchase so much that it would be difficult to meet the demand.
Dinner was at a nice restaurant a block in from the water. Mine was excellent octopus. Alice and Ivor had ver nice filets. It was leisurely and filling.
After dinner Alice and I walked to the “corner”. This is where the shore makes a right angle turn and the town continues on. The lights are bright and it makes for an interesting view. On the way home to Smile we passed several souvenir shops and an ice cream shop with a line people well out the door .
The Corner
Time to get some sleep.

Read your blog before photos were posted. Seeing that plank, there is no way, I would get on that catamaran, let alone disembark it. I would fall into the water. You too are “really” adventurous and also steady on your feet.
