Charter Day 5

 July 7, Thursday - Charter Day 5

Today we will sail to a bay a couple of hours away from Rogoznica. This will give us a short sail of just 2 to 3 hours to get back to the marina, refuel the boat and have the charter company check the boat for any damage we may have caused.

I was up before 7:00 and watched the parade of cruisers provisioning at the market in front of us. This went on even as trucks arrived with fresh fruits and vegetables. We had breakfast and then retrieved our gangway, cast off our lines and motored away.

Before leaving the island behind us, Ivor took us around a point and into a bay to show us the submarine caves. These were built in World War II to hide and protect submarines that defended the coast. They are impressively reinforced with concrete and appear quite long. They extend well into the mountain. Some small boats motored in and some tourists who arrived by van walked in on a narrow ledge. That was not possible for us. After a good look we left the bay under power.

Outside the bay we raised sail and the wind took us slowly toward our objective. That didn’t last long as the wind died and we resorted to motoring. We were headed to Sesula Bay on Solta island. We arrived with a parade of boats at about 4:00. The mooring are was already pretty full. 2 men in small boats worked as a team. One assisted in getting the boat secured to the mooring ball. The other secured a stern line fittings in the rocks lining the shore. As more boats arrived they were accommodated by securing 2 boats to each mooring.

We would be leaving by 7:00 in the morning. This bothered Ivor because it meant he would have to swim ashore early to release our stern line. Then we would have to release the lines that attached the neighboring boat to us. Then we would motor away. Ivor started this process at 6:15. Fortunately the wind was in our favor and gently pushed the other boat away. This greatly eased our departure.

The wind had increased overnight. We would have to motor to Rogoznica. The swells were significant. The ride was bumpy and rocky. We landlubbers always used a handhold. Ivor moved around as if we were standing still. We had breakfast and there was no food left over. What we thought was too much on Sunday barely made it to Friday.
