October 10, 2022 - Monday - Aspendos and Konya

We departed Antalya and headed to Aspendos leaving the sea behind us. We were in t he mountains now. Aspendos has the world’s best preserved Roman theater. This is not our first Roman theater so we can confirm that it is very well preserved. And it is huge.

It is still used today for performances. The stage is quite large and the seating is huge. We stayed on the ground level in deference to our knees. The stairs are not exactly even or very low. We were still able to gauge the enormity of the theater.

On the way to Konya we stopped at a roadside fruit stand. Saba treated us all to a surprise. We each got a banana grown in the region. It was excellent. The flavor was sweet. The texture was firm. And the skin peeled properly without making a mess. Very enjoyable.

After lunch our next stop was the museum dedicated to the founder of the whirling dervish sect. Mevlana was dedicated to seeking the good in others. This is their goal. The whirling dervish ceremony is a trance like experience in which the dervish confirms and enhances his belief.

We viewed the tombs of Mevlana and his wife before leaving the museum. In Cappadocia we will attend a ceremony.

A quick drive brought us to the Karatay Tile Museum just 10 minutes before closing. The staff graciously permitted us to stay past closing for a proper visit. Turkish tiles are exquisite. We were first exposed to them in 2013, and have admired them ever since. This fine collection reinforced our admiration.

The final drive of the day took us to our hotel in Konya. Dinner was in the hotel.
