July 27, Wednesday - Naples, Italy
Today we return to Naples after 9 years. We visited Pompeii then and a museum in the city. So today we will walk on our own.
Arrival at Naples
We left the terminal and started walking along the road that follows the shore. Traffic was very heavy and passed closer to the walkway than we liked. Soon we turned onto a marina walkway and felt much safer. At the far side of the marina we entered a nice park. The shade of the trees provided a welcome relief from the hot sun. As we got to the end of the park we were at an old kiddie park. It was very small and the rides were antiques by our standards. It was clean and well maintained.
Across from the terminal
We walked around the amusement park and started up the hill on a sidewalk parallel to the road. At the top of the hill the sidewalk followed the shore. Across the street were apartments and hotels with fantastic views. Our goal today was Castle Niobe out on a point.
Ouch!
They come by boat
We arrived at last and joined the line to get in. At the gate we were turned away because it was necessary to book an appointment online. The next available time was 3 hours later. We did not want to sit in the cafe that long. We headed back. It would have been nice to have had some advanced notice of this requirement. This is another example of how communication has broken down on the ship. We used to get a map of the port city with comments on things to do and how to get around. We guess that is now history.
At least our journey back to the shore walk took us through some interesting neighborhoods. While we did not get to visit a market we did get to visit a church. Surprise!
